Building A Sustainable Future

Jeremy Rifkin is a well-known economist, writer, and activist who has spent decades advocating for a transition to a more sustainable and equitable economy. At this year's MIPIM conference, he gave a keynote speech on the urgent need for action on climate change and the opportunities for industries to play a positive role in the transition.

Rifkin began his speech by emphasizing the severity of the climate crisis and the need for immediate and significant action. He noted that the scientific consensus is clear. We must significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the next decade. Doing so will avoid catastrophic and irreversible impacts on the planet's climate system.

One example he cited was the growing market for energy-efficient buildings. According to Rifkin, green buildings not only have lower operating costs and higher resale values, but they also have a positive impact on employee productivity and health. In addition, he pointed out that many cities are implementing building codes and other policies that incentivize or require the use of green building practices.

Rifkin also discussed the potential for renewable energy to transform the energy sector and create new economic opportunities. He noted that solar and wind energy are now cheaper than fossil fuels in many parts of the world. Energy storing technologies are also rapidly improving. He urged real estate developers and investors to consider investing in renewable energy projects and to explore innovative business models that enable them to profit from the transition to a low-carbon economy.

By leveraging new technologies and creating a smart infrastructure, we can unlock the potential of renewable energy and create a world that is both economically prosperous and environmentally responsible. It is up to all of us to take action and ensure that we leave a livable planet for future generations.
